Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] moerlin at As of tomorrow, no more subject lines in comments on LJ
I was gonna update this with much happier stuff, but for the past week I've just been so enraged with LJ's stupidity that I've had it to here.

In case you didn't know, on 12/12 they first announced sneakily on the Russian journal of LJ's design guy that with new changes being implemented tomorrow, there will be no more subject lines in comments and that this change was "non-negotiable" (good round-up and translation here). I'm sure you all realize that this will basically make fandom and RP communities unusable. LJ's staff, however, doesn't give a shit. At least 18 pages of 100% negative feedback didn't sway them.

They've backpedaled some and will make keeping comment subject lines optional in some S2 styles, but the default (that 99% of communities are running right now) will decidedly be subject-less! Not to mention that their new and frankly, ugly design will take forever to load and make the site a pain to use on mobile browsers.

And oh, it looks like they might be taking away the drop-down menu to select icons as well, so you'll have to load all your icons as pictures to select them. Lovely. (I will beta-test tonight to see if this is actually true.)  ARRRGH!!!!!

Really, I don't know why I'm surprised. LJ is always screwing with the parts of the site that actually work and breaking them, so this is just another instance of that. Because seriously, who are subject lines hurting by just being there? (And no, it can't be a matter of server strain, considering the new "graphic" interface will definitely be using up more resources - so much fun when there's DDoS attacks!)

As far as I know, they've never once listened to their customers, so those thousands of comments already posted probably won't do anything. I've left a message expressing my concerns about the new comment pages here anyway; so if you want to do that too, go for it! If anything, it helps with the rage. ;)

Happy Birthday Deinonychus_1

You are also one of the many amazing writers that I have come to know.

Your version of Connor is always so beautiful.
So broken.
And so poignant.
(Your header says it all, seriously.)
You capture his vulnerability and his desire to be brave all in the same tone.
And holy cow is your version of Connor/Abby sexy.

You also made me see how awesome Captain Ryan is.
I came to the show for Connor, but you made me care enough to write Ryan.

I love your fics.

If anyone has not read your Five Days/Three Years (found at the top of her masterlist) series, they seriously need to get on it.
IMMEDIATELY!

:-D

OK, so, for those of you who don't know, I teach Freshman world geography.  My students are roughly 14 or 15 years old.

They have a question from my Brit friends or for anyone who lives in a different part of the world than the United States.

The politically correct version over here is African American.  OBVIOUSLY if a black person lives in the UK, they are African, but not African American.  So, our question is, what is it called?  African European?  African British?  Or something entirely different?

Thanks for your help on behalf of my insane students, (two of which I pulled off each other as they were just about to fight and both of these idiots was bigger than me).

I haven't been on to do ANYTHING on LJ for the last few days as my laptop crashed.  :-(  I managed to get a new hard drive in it and recover most of my files from my back up external and Carbonite, but I appear to have lost all my video files.  So, I'll have to start dl'ing them all again soon.  :-(  That's season 4 and 5 of Primeval, season 4 of Torchwood, and some random Dr. Who eps that I had.

Also, if anyone knows how to get a .rar file on a mac to open, I'd appreciate the info.  Thanks.

Happy birthday Prehistoriccat.
You are an amazing author for so many reasons.
You write amazing no-holds-barred fiction.
You aren't afraid to kill off your favorite characters, and you sure know how to beat them withthe angst stick if you aren't killing them off.

Your stories keep me on the edge of my seat.
Yes, this means that some times I have to wait to read them until you've published the whole thing, but that's just because they're page turners and you have me completely hooked.
I love that.
As you know, my favorite story is Bloodlines, but my new favorite story is probably Gemini.
Absolutely amazing work in both cases.
YOU SO TOTALLY ROCK!!!!!!
( And YAY for happy endings.  :-D )

I have a fic for you that E will be betaing in a day or so.  The start of school delayed me being able to finish it.  :-(

Wilemina_29 and Deinonychus_1 you're fics are still coming.  I promise.  I have not forgotten.  I was just not counting on my muse being a bit uncooperative this summer.  :-(

This would have been up sooner, but both LJ and my internet were being completely stupid.

After watching a video on called Last of the Czars, which details the final years of the Russian Romanov dynasty, I gave my students a quiz, partly because they pissed me off and weren't paying attention.

One of the questions asked, "Where did the Romanovs initially receive asylum?"  The answer is Great Britain (but it was later revoked).

Well, one of my genius kids who obviously paid very close attention (not) to the video answered, "The woods."  LOL!!!!!!!!  *falls off chair laughing*

The sad thing is that they could take notes and use them on the quiz... Oh, and they're supposed to be IB/AP kids.  :-/  Can we say fail????

I have spent all day today since about 7 am on a Saturday laying either in bed on kneeling on the bathroom floor sick as a dog.  No fever, and nothing else is wrong with me except for an extremely upset stomach.  I ate 1 cracker and puked it up about fifteen or twenty minutes later.

So, my question applies because I purposefully made Connor insanely sick at the hands of Philip Burton.  Was I too mean to him and now I'm paying the price?  LOL!

I am currently trying to hold down the one anti-nausea pill I took a little while ago with a mouthful of water.

[livejournal.com profile] alyse, I'm almost done with my Primevalathon fic, but I can't do it right now.  I'll get it up ASAP.  I'm so sorry.  At least we're only talking about a delay of a day or two, three at most.

[livejournal.com profile] evenstar_estel, I'm sorry I haven't got your corrections back to you.  I'm really hoping this is just a little 24-hour stomach bug.  :-(

Happy Birthday to [info]wilemina_29 .

You are so freaking amazing I almost can't stand it.

You were the first author whose stories made me fall in love with fanfiction.

Everything before had been utter silliness until I came across a absolute gem of a fic called

The Ring.
(link to first chapter)

This fic has if all:

amazing drama, heartwrenching angst, and, yes,

SMOKING HOT SMUT!

This was, of course, followed by me reading

Blinded By Love
(link to first chapter)

because by this point I was hooked and could not get enough of

Connor and Abby.

I eventually branched off to other brilliant authors,

but you were totally my first.  (LOL!)

Thank you for having the courage to put yourself out there as a writer.

You are truly inspirational.

OK, I know this is way late your time, but it was the last day of standards testing at our school and so my kids were insane.  Consequently I was insanely busy.  I'm so sorry it's late and you've probably already gone to bed.  It's still the 29th here, so happy happy birthday.

I should have your b-day fic along in a week or so.  Real Life has sucked all year and is kicking my butt quite effectively.  I'm so sorry I don't have it for you today.  :-(

When I was a teenager, I read a book, a biography of sorts.  It was called The Cross and the Switchblade.  I also read it's companion book called Run Baby Run.  These two books were incredibly influential on the path my life took after that.

If your not familiar with the story, the two books go together.  They tell the incredibly true story of a country preacher who left rural America behind and headed for the mean streets of New York City.  He quite literally stood on the street corners in the worst neighborhoods and preached to the gang members in the barrios.  The gangs were losing quite a few members to conversions to Christianity.  Needless to say, they didn't appreciate that very much.  One of the gang leaders showed up and told the preacher to stop preaching or he'd "cut him into a thousand pieces."  The preacher simply replied, "even if you cut me into a thousand pieces, every one of those pieces will say Jesus loves you."  The gang leader eventually made a radical life change and became a Christian.

The Cross and the Switchblade is David Wilkerson's story.  He was the country preacher.  Run Baby Run is Nicky Cruz's story, the gang leader.  I knew from the moment I read these books that I wanted to influence teenagers in the same positive way that David Wilkerson did.  It was in reading  these books that I found my calling and passion for teenagers.  I still have copies (very well read/worn) that I pull out and reread from time to time.

Anyway, I put all that in this post because today, David Wilkerson was killed in an automobile accident up in Tyler.  It was a head on collision with an 18-wheeler.  His wife is in ICU.  He was 79 years old.  It is my belief that, for a Christian, the moment this life ends, we come face to face with God himself.  We literally take our last breath in this life and the immediate next breath is in eternity.  General William Booth, the founder of the Salvation army referred to it as being "promoted to Glory".  I believe that today, Reverend David Wilkerson was promoted to glory.

Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers, especially his wife who was injured in the same car accident earlier today.  This was a man who influenced so many, across an entire nation and the planet, my self included.  He's also the founder of both Teen Challenge and World Challenge.  I never met him, but my life was forever changed because of him.

Well done, good and faithful servant.  Enter into your rest.
